As we get into the warmer growing season it’s important to check your irrigation settings to ensure your lawn is getting adequate water. When adjusting your irrigation setting, keep in mind your lawn will benefit the most from deep, infrequent watering. For example, water for 15-20 mins 2-3 times a week vs 5-10 mins every day or every other day. See the illustration as an example.

Watering Tips

If your watering time is too short it’ll appear the grass is wet, however the water may not be reaching the roots deep into the ground. It’s critical that your roots receive enough water to grow deep, strong and healthy. This will give you a hardy and healthy turf grass. Some signs that your grass is not receiving enough water are: yellowing, cracked ground, ground separating from paved areas or shallow, sparse growing grass.

In addition, too much water or too frequent water can cause extreme over-growth. Extreme overgrowth will cause mowing to cut more than 1/3 of the grass blades as a result damaging the lawn, browning and extreme thatch from too many clippings.

Remember to water deep and infrequent. This will promote grass roots to grow deeper. Also, it will balance the growth in between mowing services to ensure we’re cutting no more than 1/3 of the grass blades. As a result, the lawn will be hardier and healthier. With a healthy lawn, it will better withstand the high temperatures and help choke out any weeds trying to creep their way in. We want your grass to look it’s best!
